Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its own set of risks. The California Motorcyclist Safety Program helps to ensure motorcyclists are ready for safe riding on roadways.
This program offers mandatory and voluntary training courses that can benefit both new and experienced riders.
The basic motorcyclist training course or MTC provides fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for safe motorcycle operation. This course covers topics such as basic motorcycle controls, turning, braking and evasive maneuvers. By completing this course, riders can improve their confidence and ability to handle various riding situations effectively.
This is a requirement for riders under the age of 21 who wish to get a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. It requires the completion of 15 hours of classroom and riding instruction.
The premier program is for riders who already have some experience but want to enhance their skills further. This course focuses on advanced riding techniques, including cornering, swerving and emergency braking. It can help riders become more adept at handling challenging riding conditions.
This is an extension of the basic program. It includes 21 hours of classroom and riding instruction.
Completing a course in the CMSP allows a person the option of a waiver to skip the Department of Motor Vehicles’ motorcycle skills test. This waiver can save riders time and make it easier for them to obtain their motorcycle license. Participating in a program may also lead to insurance discounts for riders.
The California Highway Patrol manages the CMSP and recommends anyone wanting to ride a motorcycle to sign up for a course.
