Motorcycling is a popular activity for many California residents. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents often result in serious injuries or even death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2018, approximately 80% of all motorcycle accidents resulted in injury or death, while passenger vehicle accidents accounted for just 20%.

There are many different causes of motorcycle accidents, and if you are a motorcyclist, it is important that you are aware of them to try to protect yourself on the road.

Factors within your control

Before you take your motorcycle out on the road, make sure you have the proper training and experience. Many motorcycle accidents occur due to driver inexperience.

Additionally, do not go out on the road with an improperly maintained motorcycle. Keep it in good working condition and perform regular maintenance.

Speeding and impaired driving are two other common causes of motorcycle accidents. While these are typical factors in all motor vehicle accidents, motorcyclists often suffer more serious injuries in accidents due to the small size of motorcycles compared to other vehicles.

Factors out of your control

These are all causes that are largely within your control. There are several other factors that contribute to motorcycle accidents that are out of your control.

Poorly maintained roads can be extremely dangerous to motorcyclists. Roads should have proper lighting and clearly marked lines for curves and shoulders.

Uneven surfaces, such as roads filled with gravel or other debris can cause you to lose control of your motorcycle.

The weather can impact your safety. Roadways in autumn can be cluttered with leaves, summertime construction can cause roads to be filled with wet paint and rain always has the potential to impair driving.

Protecting your rights

While you might do all you can to protect yourself, negligently maintained roads, or other negligent drivers can pose a danger to you on the road.

After a motorcycle accident, you may be struggling with major injuries and wondering where to turn. A personal injury attorney can walk you through your options and advise you on your chance of receiving compensation.
