Using statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and its Fatality Analysis Reporting System, researchers discovered that there were 186 deaths on I-5 in 2019. This was nearly 13.5 for every 100 miles. Other roads in the Golden State that had high rates of fatal accidents were I-15 and I-80.
The fatality rates in 2020 were the worst they have been since 2007. This happened while driving reduced by more than 430 billion miles when compared to 2019. Societal challenges, people working from home and not taking as many leisure trips contributed to that reduction in miles traveled. The number of road fatalities across the United States in 2020 increased by more than one-quarter when compared to 2019. With the holiday season, the current situation stabilizing, large trucks making deliveries and people heading to see family and friends again, an increase in traffic is likely, adding to the risk.
